About the Park

Puracé National Natural Park protects páramo, Andean and high-Andean forest, the Coconucos volcanic chain, and the headwaters of the Magdalena, Cauca, Patía, and Caquetá rivers. Resolution 338 of 2026 temporarily closes the park's visitor sectors and named attractions because the Puracé-Coconucos volcanic alert changed to orange, so this page explains the restriction and conservation context without presenting a route into the protected area.

Plan Your Visit

Resolution 338 of 2026 orders a temporary closure, effective from 1 August, of the San Nicolás, San Juan, San Rafael, Pilimbalá, and Paletará visitor sectors, the Puracé volcano and Coconucos volcanic-chain trails, San Juan thermal springs, and San Nicolás waterfall.

Visitor sectors temporarily closed
Closure scope
Do not book or attempt entry to the five closed visitor sectors, the routes toward Puracé volcano or any part of the Coconucos volcanic chain, San Juan thermal springs, or San Nicolás waterfall. The measure remains in force until the risk factors cease and Parques Nacionales evaluates a reopening.
Road exception
The Popayán-La Plata and Popayán-Paletará-Isnos national roads are exempt from the park closure as through-routes. That exception does not authorize stops, trails, thermal-spring visits, waterfall visits, or entry to any closed protected-area sector; check INVÍAS and local risk guidance before using either road.
Before future travel
Wait for a formal reopening notice before paying for park access, a volcano hike, condor outing, thermal-spring visit, or transfer tied to a closed sector. Recheck both Parques Nacionales and Servicio Geológico Colombiano because a general park page or an old itinerary can lag behind the current resolution.
