Pick the transfer before the turquoise water
A cheap flight, a hotel boat, a regulated park expedition, and a weather-dependent inter-island connection are not interchangeable. Start with the transfer you can realistically absorb.

These are booking structures, not promises of daily service. Each one protects the transfer that would otherwise break the trip.

Choose the Rosario Islands for the simplest short extension, or give San Bernardo its own longer transfer window.

San Andrés y Providencia · Caribbean
Best for: The easiest full-service island base, diving, and short cay outings
Choose San Andrés when you want the broadest range of flights, accommodation, diving, restaurants, and local transport. It is a complete island stay, not simply a connection point for Providencia.
Sea and connection note
A cay outing can close or change with marine conditions. Do not attach it to the same day as an onward flight or Providencia transfer.
Transfer shape: A mainland flight first; Johnny Cay and other cays are separate return boat trips
Verify the current tourist-card process and entry conditions before the flight.

San Andrés y Providencia · Caribbean
Best for: A slower Raizal island stay, reef activities, and small-scale lodging
Providencia is not a quick add-on to a short San Andrés break. Give the connection a separate day, sleep on the island long enough to absorb disruption, and prioritize local Raizal businesses and current park guidance.

The inter-island connection needs its own buffer. Baggage limits, sea state, and schedules can reshape both arrival and departure days.

The Rosario Islands are the simplest archipelago extension from Cartagena, but a crowded multi-stop excursion and an overnight on Isla Grande are different products. Decide where you will sleep before comparing operators.

Tour names can hide the exact island, beach, dock, and return time. Open-water conditions also affect small-boat comfort and schedules.

Múcura works when the island itself is the destination. Stay long enough to justify two marine transfers, confirm freshwater and meal arrangements, and avoid combining it with the Rosario Islands in a rushed weekend.
Sea and connection note
Tolú commonly means less time on open water than Cartagena. The best departure still depends on the wider route and confirmed operator.

Ask the accommodation to confirm the boat, dock, luggage allowance, and contact person.
Check park fees, meals, drinking water, electricity, Wi-Fi, and card acceptance.

Best for: A low-key village island, nature, and a deliberately slower route
Choose Isla Fuerte for a smaller community-based stay rather than resort infrastructure. It needs a mainland road leg, a local boat, cash planning, and direct confirmation with the accommodation or operator.

Isla Fuerte belongs to Bolívar even though its practical access is through the Córdoba coast. The final boat and road timing must be planned together.

Treat Gorgona as a protected-area expedition with a defined operator and park process. Build the wider trip around its fixed access window rather than adding the island casually to a flexible Pacific route.

Gorgona is not a public-ferry beach break. Access, services, trails, marine activities, fees, and required accompaniment must be reconfirmed.
