About the Park

Uramba Bahía Málaga National Natural Park protects a vast Pacific estuary, mangroves, islands, mudflats, rainforest-fed waterways, and one of Colombia's most important humpback-whale nursery areas. The official park page lists it as open, but its attractions are not self-guided: visitors need an approved local guide or interpreter, registration and induction, insurance arrangements, and a confirmed sea transfer from Buenaventura or Juanchaco.

Access from Buenaventura

Reach Buenaventura by road from Cali or by a current air connection, then continue from the tourist pier by sea toward Juanchaco. The official park page currently describes an approximately one-hour crossing and onward local transport for Juanchaco, Ladrilleros, or La Barra. Confirm the named boat operator, departure pier, luggage allowance, return time, weather policy, and final community connection before leaving.

Before entering

Contact the park or an approved local provider to confirm the current reservation and admission requirements, then arrange the required guide or interpreter and ask whether the provider includes the recommended accident insurance. Registration and an induction are mandatory. Transport, guiding, boat outings, meals, accommodation, and other community services are normally separate, so request a written list of inclusions and cancellation terms before paying.

Whales and sea conditions

The official 2026 responsible whale-watching season runs from July through October, while the park reports its highest local whale density in September and October. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. Use an authorized vessel with a community environmental interpreter, follow the 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. operating window and viewing instructions, and accept that rain, swell, visibility, or wildlife welfare can change or cancel the route.
