About the Park

Los Flamencos Flora and Fauna Sanctuary protects coastal lagoons, mangroves, beaches, tropical dry forest, and desert scrub around Camarones in La Guajira. The official park page lists the sanctuary as open, but visitors cannot enter without a local guide or heritage interpreter; registration and induction are required, services are contracted separately, and flamingo sightings depend on current lagoon and wildlife conditions rather than a guaranteed display on every visit.

Access from Riohacha

Use Riohacha as the practical base and travel west on the Caribbean highway to Camarones, about 20 km away. From the settlement, continue roughly 3.5 km toward Boca de Camarones and the sanctuary visitor area. Confirm the pickup point, vehicle or motorcycle transfer, return time, and whether the final local connection is included before leaving the city.

Before entering

Arrange a local guide or heritage interpreter, then register and attend the required induction. The official page currently lists no admission charge, but guiding, light-boat outings, transport, meals, accommodation, and other services are separate. Confirm accident insurance, the exact activity, total price, payment method, and cancellation terms before paying.

Bird and lagoon conditions

Flamingo numbers and the navigability of Navío Quebrado and the other coastal lagoons vary with water, salinity, weather, and wildlife movement. Ask the sanctuary or local guide what is responsibly observable that day, keep a respectful distance, follow boat and photography instructions, carry water and cash, use biodegradable sun protection, and bring no single-use plastics.
