About the Park

Macuira National Natural Park protects an unusual oasis of dry, gallery, deciduous, thorn, and low-elevation cloud forests in Colombia's Alta Guajira. The park is open and overlaps entirely with the Wayuu reserve, so it is not an independent desert detour: visitors must reserve, register, attend the induction, and enter with a park-approved local heritage interpreter while respecting restricted ecosystems and community territory.

Access

Travel from Riohacha to Uribia in about 1 hour 30 minutes, then use a suitable 4x4 with a local Wayuu driver who knows the changing tracks for the 8-9 hour journey toward Nazareth and the park. Rain, tides, sand, and road conditions can alter the route; never attempt the Alta Guajira tracks alone and keep a full buffer day before a return flight.

Before booking

Contact the park to confirm current conditions and make the required reservation before paying. Hire a park-approved guide or heritage interpreter, limited to six visitors per interpreter, and confirm registration, induction, accident insurance, 4x4 transport, water, meals, cash, permitted route, and lodging outside the park; guiding and other services are separate even though no park entry fee is charged.

Limits and conditions

The fragile cloud-forest sector is not open to tourist visits, and overnight stays are not allowed inside the park; use community lodging around Nazareth or Siapana. Carry ample water, avoid single-use plastics, ask before photographing people, do not produce commercial images without permission, and recheck rain, route, and public-order conditions in the Alta Guajira close to departure.
